Part 2: The Signature He Never Thought He Would See

Adrian stared at the papers on the table.

His voice shook.

“Elena…”

“What did you sign?”

I closed the folder calmly.

“Our divorce agreement.”

He stood frozen.

“No.”

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

He pulled out a chair and sat down heavily, as if his legs had suddenly given way.

“You’re still angry.”

“I’ll explain everything.”

I looked at him quietly.

“For once…”

“I’m not angry.”

“That’s why I’m leaving.”

He frowned.

“I don’t understand.”

“I know.”

“You never had to.”

He reached for the papers.

His hands trembled as he turned the last page.

There was my signature.

Neat.

Steady.

No hesitation.

He whispered,

“You actually signed…”

“Yes.”

He looked up.

“You always said divorce wasn’t an option.”

“I stopped saying that a long time ago.”

“You just never noticed.”

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Finally he asked,

“Is this because of Sophie?”

I smiled sadly.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“This.”

I walked into the bedroom and returned carrying a small cardboard box.

I placed it on the table.

“What’s this?”

“My hospital bracelets.”

He looked confused.

I opened the box.

Three plastic identification bands.

Three different dates.

Three different hospital admissions.

I pointed to the first one.

“This was the surgery you promised to visit.”

“You arrived seven days later.”

He lowered his eyes.

I pointed to the second.

“This was the hospitalization I never told you about.”

“You never noticed.”

Finally…

I held up the third.

“This is from last week.”

“The one you called about today.”

He stared at the bracelets in silence.

“I kept them.”

“So I wouldn’t forget.”

“What it felt like…”

“Waiting for someone who never came.”

Adrian rubbed both hands over his face.

“I made mistakes.”

“Yes.”

“I can fix them.”

I shook my head.

“They’re memories.”

“You don’t fix memories.”

His phone vibrated.

Sophie.

Again.

He stared at the screen.

This time…

He pressed Decline.

Then he switched the phone off.

He looked at me almost desperately.

“Look.”

“I chose you.”

I answered softly,

“No.”

“You chose me tonight.”

“After spending years choosing someone else every other day.”

His shoulders slumped.

Because he knew I was right.

The next morning…

He canceled every meeting.

He stayed home.

Made breakfast.

Cleaned the kitchen.

Canceled another dinner with Sophie.

He was trying.

I could see that.

But something inside me remained completely still.

Not cold.

Simply…

Finished.

That afternoon Maya arrived with the finalized documents.

She looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

“Should I come back another time?”

“No.”

I answered before Adrian could.

“This is a good time.”

She handed me the folder.

He watched every page I signed.

Halfway through…

He whispered,

“Please.”

“Don’t do this.”

I paused.

Then asked one question.

“When I was in the hospital…”

“Who stayed with Sophie?”

He looked down.

“I did.”

“When I waited alone after surgery…”

“Who stayed with me?”

Silence.

The answer required no words.

A week later…

The court scheduled the first hearing.

Adrian arrived early.

He looked exhausted.

He had lost weight.

Dark circles framed his eyes.

When the judge asked whether reconciliation was possible…

He immediately answered,

“Yes.”

The judge turned to me.

“And you?”

I answered calmly.

“No.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

That single word hurt more than any accusation.

Months passed.

The divorce became final.

He moved into a downtown apartment.

Sophie moved on with her own life.

Ironically…

She wasn’t waiting for him either.

Once the marriage ended…

The excitement disappeared.

Within weeks, she accepted a job in another city.

Adrian stood alone in an apartment far too large for one person.

For the first time in years…

There was no one waiting for him.

One rainy afternoon, nearly a year later, we met by chance outside a bookstore.

He smiled weakly.

“How have you been?”

“Good.”

“You look…”

He searched for the right word.

“Peaceful.”

“I am.”

He nodded.

“I’ve been seeing a therapist.”

“I’m glad.”

“I finally understand why you left.”

I waited.

“I kept thinking it was because of Sophie.”

He laughed bitterly.

“It wasn’t.”

“No.”

“It was because every time you needed me…”

“I convinced myself there would always be another chance.”

I smiled gently.

“There usually isn’t.”

Before we parted, he asked,

“Can I ask you one last question?”

“Of course.”

“When exactly did you stop loving me?”

I thought carefully before answering.

“I don’t know.”

“But I remember exactly when I stopped waiting.”

He looked at me silently.

“The day I realized I could leave the hospital alone…”

“…and nothing in your life would change.”

The rain continued falling softly around us.

He nodded.

“I deserved that answer.”

“No.”

I adjusted my umbrella.

“You deserved the truth.”

As I walked away, I didn’t feel victorious.

I didn’t feel angry.

I simply felt light.

For years, people thought Adrian had lost me because of another woman.

But that was never the real reason.

He lost me because love can survive disappointment.

It can survive distance.

It can even survive betrayal.

What it cannot survive…

Is being taken for granted until the person who kept waiting quietly decides…

They’re done waiting forever.
